I'm Wayman Newton. I'm a lawyer, and I've run my own practice.
I wanted my own firm. What I did not fully realize was that I was also signing up to be the receptionist, the billing department, the file clerk and the person asking for those documents again.
I've taken the prospective client call when I was supposed to be doing something else. I've waited on documents promised “tonight.” I've had invoices go invisible the second I sent them.
Eventually I asked: why am I still doing all of this myself?
Not the law. The other stuff. The law is the job I chose. The other stuff is what kept getting in the way of it.
So I'm building the administrative help I wish I'd had when I started out. Not to replace the lawyer. To let the lawyer be the lawyer.
HOW WE got here.
